Romance scam

What it is

Scammers create polished profiles on dating apps and social networks, then move quickly to private chat. They claim to be abroad, in the military, or working on oil rigs — stories that explain why they cannot meet and why money problems keep appearing.

Some romance scams transition into pig butchering once trust is high enough to discuss investing together.

How it works

1. Lure — Attractive profiles and warm early messages.
2. Isolation — Move off-platform; discourage talking to friends about the relationship.
3. Crisis — Fees, medical bills, travel, customs, or investment opportunities.
4. Extraction — Wires, gift cards, crypto, or intimate images for blackmail.
5. Disappear or escalate — New emergencies continue until you stop paying.
6. Deepfakes and AI chat can make the persona feel more consistent than older copy-paste scripts.

Red flags

• Strong feelings pushed very quickly, yet endless reasons they cannot video or meet
• Money requests tied to emergencies, travel, or investments
• Scripts that discourage you from telling family
• Profiles with stolen photos (reverse-image search finds mismatches)
• Grammar or time-zone oddities that do not match the claimed background
• Transition from romance into a trading platform they recommend

What to do if you’re targeted

• **Stop sending money** and cut contact; do not pay release fees.
• **Save evidence** (chats, receipts) and report to the platform, ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and IC3.gov (U.S.).
• **Talk to someone you trust** — these scams intentionally create shame and isolation.
• **If intimate images were shared**, seek platform takedown help and consider specialized reporting resources.
• **Harden accounts** if you shared passwords or ID photos.
• **Optional:** free identity scan when personal documents were part of the relationship story.
