Synthetic identity

A synthetic identity is a fake persona built from a mix of real and fabricated personal data — often used to open credit or accounts that look legitimate at first.

What it is

Unlike classic identity theft (pretending to be you), synthetic identity fraud invents someone new. Criminals might pair a real SSN — sometimes a child's or a little-used number — with a made-up name and address, then build credit slowly.

Victims may not notice for years, until collection calls, credit-report errors, or IRS issues appear under their number.

How it works

  1. Assemble — Real PII fragments are combined with invented details.
  2. Bootstrap — Small credit lines, fintech accounts, or utility listings establish history.
  3. Farm — The synthetic person builds a score with on-time payments.
  4. Bust-out — Large loans or purchases are taken, then abandoned.
  5. Fallout — The real SSN holder deals with disputes and damaged records.
  6. Data breaches and data brokers make raw materials easier to obtain.

Red flags

  • Credit reports showing unfamiliar thin-file accounts tied to your SSN
  • Collection notices for a person who shares your SSN but not your name
  • IRS or benefits issues suggesting another filer used your number
  • Denied credit for reasons that do not match your real history
  • Address or employer entries you have never used
  • Children's SSNs with unexpected credit activity

What to do if you’re targeted

  • **Pull credit reports** for yourself (and minors in your household if appropriate) and dispute synthetic accounts in writing.
  • **Consider a credit freeze** to block new tradelines you do not authorize.
  • **File at IdentityTheft.gov** if your SSN is being misused; keep a detailed case log.
  • **Contact creditors and bureaus** listed on the suspicious accounts.
  • **Protect SSNs** — do not share unless necessary; be wary of phishing for verification.
  • **Optional:** monitoring and a free identity scan for broader exposure signals; insurance up to $1M is subject to policy terms.
