Social media takeover

A social media takeover is account takeover aimed at your social profiles — attackers post as you, message your contacts, run scams, or lock you out.

What it is

Compromised social accounts are used to spread malware links, beg friends for money, promote fake investments, or damage reputation. Business and creator accounts can lose revenue and trust overnight.

Attackers get in through phishing DMs, reused passwords, malicious third-party apps, or hijacked email/phone recovery paths.

How it works

  1. Entry — Phishing, stuffing, malware, or stolen session cookies.
  2. Persistence — Password, email, phone, and connected apps are changed; 2FA may be removed or replaced.
  3. Abuse — Scam posts, live streams, crypto giveaways, or DMs to your network.
  4. Extortion — Sometimes they demand payment to return the account.
  5. Monitoring for suspicious posts and login alerts helps you react before your whole network is targeted.

Red flags

  • Friends report strange DMs or posts from you
  • You cannot log in; password and email were changed
  • New admins or apps connected to a Page/Business account
  • Unexpected verification codes for Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, or LinkedIn
  • Profile photo, bio, or links swapped for crypto or adult spam
  • Login alerts from cities or devices you do not recognize

What to do if you’re targeted

  • **Use the platform's hacked-account recovery** flow immediately; secure the email inbox tied to the profile first.
  • **Revoke third-party apps**, reset passwords, and enable MFA.
  • **Delete scam posts** and pin a brief warning for followers once you are back in.
  • **Tell close contacts** not to send money or click links from you.
  • **Review ad accounts and payment methods** linked to the profile.
  • **Optional:** social monitoring and a free identity scan if the takeover came with broader identity exposure.
