What it is

Data brokers build profiles from public records, purchase lists, website trackers, apps, and other sources. They may sell marketing lists, people-search pages, risk scores, or verification data.

Even when the activity is legal, the result for you can be more spam, more targeted scams, and more of your address, relatives, or phone numbers sitting in places you never chose.

How it works

1. Collect — Brokers gather records, online signals, and third-party feeds.
2. Enrich — Data is matched into profiles (contact info, demographics, interests, sometimes sensitive inferences).
3. Distribute — Profiles are sold, licensed, or posted on people-search sites.
4. Reuse — Marketers, scammers, or fraudsters may use the same raw materials in different ways.
5. Opt — out processes exist for many brokers but can be slow and fragmented across companies and states.

Red flags

• Your home address, phone, or relatives listed on people-search sites you never joined
• A surge in targeted spam or scam calls after a move or public filing
• Marketing mail that knows oddly specific details about you
• Difficulty finding a clear customer relationship for who holds your data
• Opt-out forms that require more personal info than you are comfortable sharing
• Repeated reappearance of listings after you already removed them

What to do if you’re targeted

• **Search your name** on major people-search sites and use their opt-out flows where available.
• **Tighten privacy settings** on social accounts; limit what is public.
• **Use unique emails/phones** for sign-ups when practical so leaks are easier to trace.
• **Freeze credit** if you are worried about new-account fraud from exposed PII.
• **Be skeptical of removal services** that demand large upfront fees without clear scope — read terms carefully.
