AI voice clone

What it is

A short clip from social media, a voicemail, or a video can be enough to generate a usable clone. Attackers use it for family-emergency calls, fake executive instructions, or fake bank-security outreaches.

The voice may sound right while the story is wrong. Verification habits matter more than trusting your ear alone.

How it works

1. Sample — Audio is scraped or recorded.
2. Train / generate — Software produces speech that matches tone and accent.
3. Call or drop — You receive a live-sounding call, voicemail, or voice note.
4. Ask — Money, gift cards, secrets, or one-time codes are requested.
5. Silence — The real person is unreachable because the story demands secrecy or speed.
6. Often paired with caller — ID spoofing and classic vishing scripts.

Red flags

• A loved one or boss calls from an unknown number with an urgent money need
• They refuse video, refuse to answer a personal challenge question, or insist on secrecy
• Background audio sounds flat, clipped, or oddly perfect
• The request involves gift cards, crypto, wires, or changing payroll details
• Follow-up texts push you not to worry the family
• The real person's usual phone goes straight to voicemail while the clone keeps you talking

What to do if you’re targeted

• **Hang up and call back** on a known number or use a family code word.
• **Never send money or codes** based on voice alone when the ask is unusual.
• **If you paid:** contact your bank immediately; report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and IC3.gov (U.S.).
• **Limit public voice samples** when you can; review privacy on social videos.
• **Brief family and coworkers** so urgency is not treated as proof.
• **Optional:** identity monitoring if the incident included sharing personal data.
